The witch parade (Heksenstoet) in Beselare, Witches and Cats, July 2009

Witches and cats

This is the last in this little posting series about the Heksenstoet in Beselare.com. This video clip is a compilation showing some of the witches and cats that took part in the parade. I have enough material to make another clip of the parade but I thought that I would save that for the autumn or winter, when the weather is not so good and there is not so much going on, enjoy.

How lovely! I love that they celebrate witches as opposed to being frightened of them!

I think that it is the witches that need to worry. This event is based on events surrounding the plague and the Witches were blamed, many being tortured and burned alive.

Oh yes. They liked to blame everyone for the plague, didn't they? Especially people who *washed* and didn't get the plague.

Well they, were accused of ruining the beer as well, a crime that would still get a pitchfork and burning torch carrying mob on the hunt, even in modern day Belgium :)
